Meet Shelly. A former Beauty YouTuber, Shelly has found her passion for helping video creation be more accessible and approachable for creators looking to build credibility and eventually convert attention to revenue. She gets inspiration from a wide range of different creators to help give a well-rounded perspective on how to make better content on YouTube.
We had the chance to sit down with Shelly and learn a bit more about her.
Define Your Channel in 5 Words.
Helping creators publish better content.
Why did you start making videos?
I originally started in the beauty space trying to create more content to represent people like myself (women in a minority). I quickly learned I was more passionate about helping and teaching others to do the things that intimidated them like using technology to make better content, editing, and find ways to monetize what they care about.
Where do you get inspiration for your videos?
From questions that my community has asked, from my friends, from websites like answer the public, TubeBuddy of course and I also like to look into my analytics as well for videos that someone was on before mine to see if there is something missing that I can create.
What equipment and software do you like to use for your videos?
It depends, for my main videos I use a Canon 80D, a Sigma 18-35 lens, a Rode Mic Pro shotgun mic, a couple of ring lights and softboxes. For live streaming I use a Panasonic G7 with a blackmagic box and Audio Technica 2035 microphone with a focusrite scarlett 2i2. For my editing software, I use Final Cut Pro X. My thumbnails are a combination of PicMonkey and Photoshop. I have a vlog camera and I never use it, I always just end up using my iPhone when I travel.
How do you get past mental roadblocks?
Take a digital detox! Put down my phone and walk away from social media. I go back to my list of video ideas and see which one gets me excited to film. If I don’t feel like filming, I take a break and I don’t force it. The less I consume social media, the less FOMO I have and the better I feel overall honestly. A puppy playtime never hurts either.
How do you celebrate milestones/success?
In the past, I wanted to celebrate each achievement a lot more than I do now. I still have one milestone that is immensely important for me to hit which is one day hitting 100k but otherwise, I try not to make my milestones be about a specific subscriber number now. Now I try to celebrate achievements like: launching my first digital download product and setting up an email list, publishing a certain amount of videos, learning a new skill instead of just a subscriber number which I don’t have that much control over.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I would like to be a full time content creator and also be coaching others who want to use YouTube to expand their message or their business. I want to be an encourager but at a higher level affecting more people. I’d also loved to have spoken onstage at either VidCon or VidSummit and helped organize more conferences spotlighting female talent.

Which YouTubers do you like to watch?
So many! I really try to cross a lot of genres to get exposure to a lot of different types of styles and topics. Phillip DeFranco, Jessica Braun, Madison Miller, Nick Nimmin, Dee Nimmin, Jade Darmawangsa, Amy Landino, Gary Vee,  Jen Luvs Reviews, Tati Westbrook, Claire Marshall, Safiya Nygaard, Jenna Marbles, Taylor Wynn, RawBeautyKristi, Peter McKinnon, Shane Dawson, Sunny Lenarduzzi, Creator Insider, TubeBuddy, Roberto Blake, Rosanna Pansino, Shameless Maya,Cody Wanner and SWOOP. Plus probably a ton more I forgot to list if you can believe it! My subscription list is large!
If you were a bird, what kind of bird would you be?
I had no idea so I went online and took a “bird personality” quiz and apparently I’m a Swan. This is their definition not mine but funnily enough, fairly accurate:
‘You are a gentle person, kind and loving to all those you meet. You move gracefully throughout the world, making people smile with your soft smile and positive energy. You are a bit quiet, but don’t let that fool anyone, you’re also smart as a whip.’
